چکیده

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and diagnostic value of F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (F-FDG PET/CT) and Tc-methylenediphosphonate (MDP) whole-body bone scanning (BS) for the detection of osteolytic bone metastases. Methods: Thirty-four patients with pathologically confirmed malignancies and suspected osteolytic bone metastases underwent F-FDG PET/CT and Tc-MDP whole-body BS within 30 days. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy with respect to the diagnosis of osteolytic bone metastases and bone lesions were compared between the two imaging methods. Results: The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of F-FDG PET/CT for the diagnosis of osteolytic bone metastases were 94.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 91.6–96.2%), 83.3% (95% CI, 43.6–96.9%), and 94.2% (95% CI, 91.5–96.1%), respectively. It was found that Tc-MDP whole-body BS could discriminate between patients with 50.2% (95% CI, 45.4–55.1%) sensitivity, 50.0% (95% CI, 18.8–81.2%) specificity, and 50.2% (95% CI, 45.5–55.1%) accuracy. F-FDG PET/CT achieved higher sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in detecting osteolytic bone metastases than 99mTc-MDP wholebody BS (p<0.001). Conclusions: F-FDG PET/CT has a higher diagnostic value than Tc-MDP whole-body BS in the detection of osteolytic bone metastases, especially in the vertebra.

A comparative study of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography and 99mTc-MDP whole-body bone scanning for imaging osteolytic bone metastases

BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and diagnostic value of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) and (99m)Tc-methylenediphosphonate (MDP) whole-body bone scanning (BS) for the detection of osteolytic bone metastases. Is (99m)Tc-MDP whole body bone scintigraphy adjuvant to (18)F-FDG-PET for the detection of skeletal metastases?

PURPOSE Due to the fact that fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ((18)F-FDG-PET/CT) and technetium-99m-methylenediphosphonate ((99m)Tc-MDP) whole body scans identify bone metastases by different mechanisms, i.e. by using glucose metabolism and osteoblastic response in the bone, respectively, it can be expected that there may be some differences betwee...

Clinical study of 99mTc-3P-RGD2 peptide imaging in osteolytic bone metastasis

OBJECTIVE To investigate the value of integrin αvβ3 targeted imaging with 99mTc-HYNIC-PEG4-E[PEG4-c(RGDfk)]2 (99mTc-3P-RGD2) as a radiotracer in dectecting osteolytic bone metastases. METHODS This is a retrospective study involving a cohort of 69 consecutive patients including 59 with lung cancer and 10 with other cancers. Patients were required to receive whole body scan (WBS) and regional S...

Radionuclide Bone Scintigraphy: An Interesting Case Report

It is well established that Technetiummethylene diphosphonate (Tc MDP) whole body bone scintigraphy (WBBS) can demonstrate multiple lesions with increased radiotracer concentration in involved bone. But it is hard to differentiate multiple benign osteolytic lesions from disseminated bone metastases. Even combined with medical history and multiple imaging results, clinical diagnosis of metastati...

A 50-year-old man with postprandial abdominal pain, weight loss, and generalized body ache was referred to Nuclear medicine department for a whole body bone scan to look for any malignancy. Clinical examination did not reveal any specific positive findings. He underwent aTechnetium-99m Methylene Diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) bone scan which showed no obvious bone pathology. But there was...
